Were We Born This Good?

Jul 9 by Michael Benner

I overheard something today that made me think. It was an experienced and successful developer ripping on cheap and sloppy Craigslist developers. Now, I know I have done it and many people I respect in the industry comment under their breath about projects that are "picking up garbage" created by inferior developers. But today for some reason (maybe the clarity that comes with the lack of sleep) it hit me,

"You can't educate a person;..."

Apr 21 by Michael Benner

"...you can only create an environment in which he can educate himself" -Max Theiler

I recently read The American Plague (a great book on the history of Yellow Fever) and that quote stuck out and has become a favorite of mine.

As many of you know I am learning Flex 3/AIR right now and have been trying to "educate" myself and the Internet is a unbelievable resource, as is

AIR Demo Coming Soon...

Mar 31 by Michael Benner

Last night I stayed up working on an AIR project for my wife's photo studio and thought it would make a very cool AIR demo to post up. With that in mind I bought a new domain name and will be posting all my ("web 2.0") demos there. What is it you might ask? Well

Flex, Oh How You Have Changed...

Mar 28 by Michael Benner

...And I think I love you (or more accurately flash remoting) again.

Flash back to ColdFusion 6 MX and Flash 5. Something called Flash Remoting was added to the mix and it let me put data into Flash from ColdFusion. Now I am a CF developer not a Flash Designer, but I as beaming with ideas on how cool this would be.

So my company embarked on a project to make a CRM in

CFEclipse Tag Insight

Mar 25 by Michael Benner

OK, so on the group today has been a discussion about tag insight/auto complete. A) How do I shut if off? and B) Why would you? First the easy part, to shut it off go to Windows->Preferences->CFEclipse->Editor->Delay Insight. Set that value to something high (it is in milliseconds) and there you go.

Now I am in the A camp for a few reasons that

Quick, Write That File I Need To Include It

Mar 19 by Michael Benner

I ran into an interesting situation today and all I can say about my solution is became quite unique (I think). We will do this backwards...The solution, build a query from a query and some conditional statements, then generate a file from that output and then in the very next line of code include that new file to perform a calculation.

Now that said

Coldfusion rescued by PHP?!?!?!?

Mar 6 by Michael Benner

Say it isn't so...I had to install XAMPP on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.2 to get Coldfusion 8 running. Yeah, I know XAMPP has Apache and mySQL, but let's be honest, it was built to make PHP easier to install. So after finishing my RAID install (see earlier post) I took this opportunity to TRY and install CF8 (which never worked for me in since Leopard). So after reading

Whew!!! MVC Conversion Underway

Feb 27 by Michael Benner

Let me tell you changing frameworks is never easy. I have done it twice now. Once from a custom built internal framework to a "main stream" framework and now from an out dated framework to a "new" (at least for me) method and framework.

I think I am changing MVC from Model(database) View(layout) Controller(event handler)

Introspective

Feb 19 by Michael Benner

Well with Self Help comes introspection and I have had plenty of that this week. While I have not made great progress on the Coldbox based Sales Management and Issue Resolution modules, what I have accomplished has been a great change in how I am doing things. Normally
