Location, Location, Location

Aug 22 by Michael Benner

Just over three years ago I moved to North Carolina for both professional and personal reasons. The move seemed to make sense. But after awhile I found my self excited for my trips back to California, no not for the great weather, surf or other really great things, but for the fun of being with like minded developers and professionals I had a relationship with. That seemed to be lacking in NC. I found that over the years I got less enthusiastic about code and my self education even got stagnant.

Pan ahead 3 years and I am now in Scottsdale, AZ and within weeks of my move I had met a great group of guys online that,

Are You A Digital Pack Rat?

Jul 22 by Michael Benner

So today I began what seems to have become an annual hunt for a site that gets used for 1 week every year and then gets taken down for the rest of the year and stored. Then every year I have to go on a hunt and every year during the hunt I find stuff that is OLD and I start pondering the purging of it.

In this day and age of 1TB drives and

Were We Born This Good?

Jul 9 by Michael Benner

I overheard something today that made me think. It was an experienced and successful developer ripping on cheap and sloppy Craigslist developers. Now, I know I have done it and many people I respect in the industry comment under their breath about projects that are "picking up garbage" created by inferior developers. But today for some reason (maybe the clarity that comes with the lack of sleep) it hit me,

TweetDeck, The Next Step In My Twitter Addiction

Jul 4 by Michael Benner

TweetDeck has entered public beta (link at the bottom) and you should run out and get it ASAP.

I have become addicted to Twitter. TwitterCFC (by Andy Jarrett), Twhirl, Twinkle and now TweetDeck. I use TwitterCFC for several Coldfusion projects and thought about building an air client, but I have no need. Iain Dodsworth has built TweetDeck that meets and exceeds my expectations for overall feature set.

I have started using Twitter for light messaging on our Intranet.

Settling In And Getting Back To Work

Jun 28 by Michael Benner

So this site has been dark lately and for that I apologize. Between moving cross country and changing jobs I have put this to the side. But as my schedule gets somewhat normal, it is time to start writing again.

Here is the update. I now live in Scottsdale and work for pipelinesuite.com and onlinelogix but now have begun full time at Precision Component Systems, LLC. This new position puts me at the head of a project that I like to think of as Facebook meets BrightKite meets match.com of the Engineered Wood Industry. While I can't disclose to much information at this point in time, it will enable me to post some very cool code samples and concepts. The application is going to be built on ColdBox 2.6 and will use jQuery and/or Flex 3 where appropriate.

Anyway, I am off to enjoy the weekend with my family, I will post my jQuery experience from the last week tomorrow night, until then enjoy your weekend.

Twinkle, Best iPhone App???

May 15 by Michael Benner

Lately I have been using Twitter(refriedchicken) a lot more and it is all thanks to Twinkle. For those that have an "open" iPhone you must download Twinkle. Not only can I post my pictures and updates I can find people locally that also use Twinkle.

Locally, that reminds me. I like Brightkite.com (if you want an invite leave a comment)

May, The Craziest Month of the Year

May 15 by Michael Benner

You may have noticed that my posts have been light lately. Well let me say, May needs more than 31 days. Not only is my personal life swamped (Mother's Day, Wife's Birthday, Grandpa-in-law's Birthday, Daughter's Birthday, Brother's Birthday, 3 Friend's Birthdays, Daughter's Dance Recital, Daughter's Kindergarten Grad and moving cross country, oh yeah and a 1 week long business trip). Yup, I usually just take this month off, but this year the community has several exciting things going on. Here are a few things I am currently playing with.

OpenBD released, with a VMware image, Coldbox 2.6 Beta and ColdBricks Beta.

I have been

"You can't educate a person;..."

Apr 21 by Michael Benner

"...you can only create an environment in which he can educate himself" -Max Theiler

I recently read The American Plague (a great book on the history of Yellow Fever) and that quote stuck out and has become a favorite of mine.

As many of you know I am learning Flex 3/AIR right now and have been trying to "educate" myself and the Internet is a unbelievable resource, as is

Flex, Oh How You Have Changed...

Mar 28 by Michael Benner

...And I think I love you (or more accurately flash remoting) again.

Flash back to ColdFusion 6 MX and Flash 5. Something called Flash Remoting was added to the mix and it let me put data into Flash from ColdFusion. Now I am a CF developer not a Flash Designer, but I as beaming with ideas on how cool this would be.

So my company embarked on a project to make a CRM in
