Coldfusion rescued by PHP?!?!?!?

Mar 6 by Michael Benner

Say it isn't so...I had to install XAMPP on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.2 to get Coldfusion 8 running. Yeah, I know XAMPP has Apache and mySQL, but let's be honest, it was built to make PHP easier to install. So after finishing my RAID install (see earlier post) I took this opportunity to TRY and install CF8 (which never worked for me in since Leopard). So after reading

Whew!!! MVC Conversion Underway

Feb 27 by Michael Benner

Let me tell you changing frameworks is never easy. I have done it twice now. Once from a custom built internal framework to a "main stream" framework and now from an out dated framework to a "new" (at least for me) method and framework.

I think I am changing MVC from Model(database) View(layout) Controller(event handler)

When Is A Fork Not A Fork?

Jan 29 by Michael Benner

When it is a straight path with no branches. I know, that makes about as much sense as telling IIS that root path is X and Coldfusion that the root path is Y. What is worse X = Y, except when it doesn't...

Good, I think you are now officially as lost as I was earlier when trying to move my Coldbox site to a domain name on

ColdBox Works Out Of The Proverbial Box (Dare I Say Day 1)

Dec 3 by Michael Benner

I must say, sometimes I just feel like the stars align and it clicks. Then again, maybe it is just the hard work Luis put forth. As I said the other day, I watch the preso on ColdBox 2.5 and I thought I would give it a try. So before leaving for the airport I download CF8 developer edition and ColdBox 2.5 RC2. While at the airport I installed them both. I spent the next few hours reading "I Am Legend" and forgetting about the install. Then when I landed

ColdBox 2.5 RC2 Presentation

Nov 30 by Michael Benner

Luis Majano gave a great (minus the odd Leopard crashes) presentation last night for the CF Meetup Group run by Charlie Arehart. I have been shopping frameworks lately and was heading down the Model Glue path.

I am not sure why, but I was not looking at ColdBox

30, hmm, Days of Coldfusion 8

Oct 31 by Michael Benner

Well, that was a long 30 days...Yeah, I was using the metric system for my 30 days. Well, I have used Coldfusion 8. I actually have it running on two Virtual Systems locally on my Mac in Developer Edition, I have it running on a Development server and running on 2 of my 5 production servers, yup I said 2, not 4 or 5. I am still running a legacy app on CF5 (until Monday at least) and the rest are running on CFMX7 and this is do to a few things, 2 of which have to do with some strange issues I experienced with CF8.

Chirp, Chirp, Chirp

Oct 19 by Michael Benner

OK, so it has been more than a little quiet around here lately. It is amazing what gets put to the side when that thing called life gets crazy.

That said, I did find time on my several plane trips back and forth across the country to take some notes on topics I want to post about. The PS3 game Lair and remote play with the PSP, the new slim PSP and TV Out, Halo 3, Coldfusion 8, Neighborhood Computer Guy, Cool Helps systems and methods, my experience with custom frameworks and much much more.

Also, I went out and bought a 3G Laptop Connect card for the MacBook Pro and am actually testing it right now to make this post (the weather has nuked the Internet connection here at the house).

So, sit tight, thanks for the patience.

Coldfusion 8 is to Web 2.0 as Coldfusion 4.x was to .com Bubble

Sep 4 by Michael Benner

That's right I said it. Web 2.0. Yup, said it again. OK, so I am sure many of you can remember back to the great days of getting data out of a database, letting a designer make it pretty and having a VC throw lots of money at the company.

While those times were great and I had a lot of fun listening to everyone's plans to rule the world, I also remember how easy it became to give it to them with Coldfusion. Prior to Coldfusion I was writing primarily ASP sites doing the heavy lifting with Visual Basic and Transaction Server and it would take time, third party plug-ins and did I mention time. Coldfusion

Coldfusion 8 and code compatibilty

Aug 13 by Michael Benner

So, I have been using CF8 for a little while now and all my code seemed to be working, until I got a phone call the other day.

It seems that I was using a built-in function of Coldfusion, at least a CF8 function. getFileInfo().

Coldfusion 8 Day 3 (IIS Virtual Directory and Built-In FCKEditor)

Aug 7 by Michael Benner

I was working on editing some of my samples mentioned earlier and trying to implement the "easy" FCKEditor now built into Coldfusion (I have been using it for a year as a standalone now and am pretty familiar with it) and none of it worked. So much for "easy". But whatever, I thought. These are the typical issues you run into moving to a new server and trying new features.

I begin reading the docs (yes, I know should have read them first) and tried the samples and still no luck. Not wanting to reinstall the server (in case something went screwy there) I begin checking mappings, etc. I checked the links for the style sheet and the xml config files and they didn't work.
